Back in my halcyon grammar school days, my teachers at times wondered why I was entertaining classmates with stories rather than attending to assignments. Today, I tell tales out of school, weaving copy that is on point, imaginative, and, so say my clients, readable. I also wield my editorial pen to others’ copy, noting the hidden wonders of collective nouns and plural possessive apostrophes, and why the semicolon is a mark all writers should befriend.
What else? I prefer refined and illustrative text, shudder at word repetition, am rather fond of the currently beleaguered em dash, and would applaud banishing “amazing” as the go-to descriptor for seemingly everything.
Among the projects I’ve helmed through the years: copy and feature writing, editorial, blogs, brand positioning and identity standards, internal and external communications, speeches, catalogs, direct mail, donor and partnership material, annual reports, and style guides. And the industries in which I’ve worked? They include healthcare, transportation management and logistics, academia, nutrition and wellness, life sciences, consumer goods, and philanthropic awareness.
